Last reviewed: 6 November 2026. Here is how to open a joint demat account in India: identify two to three eligible holders, select a Depository Participant (DP) that supports joint accounts, complete KYC for each person, submit the account opening documents and take up verification. Once the account opening application is approved, the DP opens the account. A normal joint Demat account has one first holder and up to two additional holders. There is no necessity for the additional holders to be married or related to each other, as per the terms and conditions of the service provider. Before opening the account, check whether your chosen DP allows fully online joint account opening or requires signed paperwork.
Before applying: confirm joint-account availability
Not all brokers’ standard online sign-up flows support additional holders. A screen that opens an individual account does not automatically open a joint account. Some providers support Demat accounts with two or three holders, but their standard individual online e-KYC process cannot be assumed to support joint applications. Contact the account-opening support desk to check the joint application process, whether signed paper documents are required, and how bank and trading account arrangements work. A minor cannot be a joint holder in an adult account.
If you need to check available routes on InvestEdge360, contact the account-opening support desk about joint Demat eligibility and documents before providing your personal details. For availability and method of joint opening, check with your broker and DP.
Documents required to open a joint Demat account
The main distinction from an individual application is that each proposed holder is obligated to provide their own identification and KYC documents. One PAN card and / or one person's identity proof can not be considered to prove identification of all holders. Use this preparation checklist for a typical resident-individual application; the exact accepted documents and format depend on the latest KYC rule and the DP.
Document or detail | Who needs it? | Practical check |
|---|---|---|
PAN and PAN verification | Every holder, subject to applicable exemptions | Names and birth dates should match the application and official records. |
Valid proof of identity | Every holder | Provide an accepted, current document or approved electronic KYC record. |
Proof of address | Every holder as applicable | Check current address and correspondence details; ask if additional proof is needed. |
Photograph and signature or approved e-sign | Every holder | Use the provider's prescribed format and complete individual verification. |
Bank account information and proof | For the account's registered bank details | Keep a cancelled cheque, statement or passbook ready. Check whether the linked bank account must be in the first holder's name or jointly held with that first holder. |
Mobile number and email | As specified for each holder | Ensure working contact details for alerts, OTPs and KYC communication. |
Joint account-opening and nomination choices | All holders where required | Check names, order, operating instructions and signatures before submission. |
Aadhaar may be one route for digital identity verification or e-sign, but it should not be described as the only possible KYC document. A DP may ask for additional information, updated KYC records, income or occupation details, or documents for non-resident applicants. Bring originals for verification if requested.
How to open a joint Demat account in India: step-by-step process
Step 1: Choose the first holder and other joint holders
Decide who will be first, second and third joint holder. For example, in the case of Asha and Rohan, Asha can be the first holder and Rohan the second holder. Normally, the details of the first holder of the account will govern important correspondence and may affect the broker’s choice of bank and trading arrangements. Generally, adding a spouse or another joint holder to an existing individual Demat account may require opening a new joint account and arranging an eligible transfer of securities. It is to be noted that a joint Demat account does not automatically mean a joint trading account, and you need to ascertain how trading access will be created.
Step 2: Check the DP's joint-account application channel
Find out the application process from the DP before undertaking any individual process. There may be a variation in the routes taken by different DPs. Also, there may be use of digital KYC, video KYC, e-signatures, or a combination thereof. Find out if all holders have to be present together to sign any document. There may be no same day activation and/or fully paperless opening.
Step 3: Complete KYC for each person
Enter each holder’s name, PAN, date of birth, address and the required declarations accurately. Where the Depository can retrieve an existing validated KYC record from a KYC Registration Agency, additional documents may be requested for account specific verification. Each holder must complete the required verification; the first holder cannot verify the identity of other holders by signing the declaration.
Step 4: Fill the joint Demat opening form
Enter the holders as per the agreed sequence and choose the permitted mode of operation. The Depository Rules permit a joint account to operate the account jointly or by any one holder or survivor, for certain securities transfers, pledges and freezes, where the holders have given the applicable mandate. Other account level actions may require joint authorization, and consent of all the holders is required for appointment or replacement of a nominee. Select the option offered by the DP and check the instructions on its form. Do not confuse a Demat operating mandate with a trading-login operating mandate or legal ownership.
Step 5: Register the bank and communication details
Verify your account number, IFSC, and account name(s). The linked bank account may need to be in the first holder's name, either individually or jointly, depending on the provider's requirements. Confirm the latest bank proof and name requirements with the service provider and do not send a bank account that is held solely by another joint Demat account holder, unless it is approved. Confirm the location of where transaction statements, alerts and other account communications will be sent.
Step 6: Decide the nomination option
SEBI's circular dated 29 May 2026 states that from 1 September 2026, nomination will be optional for jointly held Demat accounts. Hence, if joint holders choose to nominate someone, all joint holders have to consent to providing or changing the nominee, irrespective of the mode of operation. Up to three nominees can be named. Nomination will not delete the joint holders’ names and will not resolve all succession issues. Take appropriate advice for complex family issues.
Step 7: Sign, submit and respond to verification queries
Ensure the required signatures or valid e-signs are given by the appropriate holders. Submit the form and supporting documents through the channel authorized by the DP, retain the acknowledgement and respond to corrections requested. The DP will verify the Demat account details and accept the account. Confirm the name and order of each of the joint holders and communicate appropriately before securities are transferred to the account.
Can a joint Demat account be opened fully online?
Opening a joint Demat account may not be fully paperless. There may be cases where joint account opening forms along with supporting documents and signatures of all holders are collected, and then submitted using the broker’s approved channel. A digital route may be available only where the provider currently supports it; the ordinary online Demat e-KYC screen may not make this available for joint holders. Paper signatures or original document verification or physical submissions may be required. Ask specifically about the current workflow for joint holders rather than choosing the single-holder option and expect a conversion later.
Also, ask about the workflow for joint holders for opening a Demat account for non-resident account holders (NRAs). There may be additional documentation for banking, resident-status, and regulation that will be specific for NRAs. A standard checklist for resident individuals may not apply for NRA joint holders.
First-holder selection, trading account and charges
A joint Demat account records securities in the agreed joint names. However, an exchange trading account has its own account opening and operating requirements. Generally, the primary Demat holder and the trading account holder need to coordinate for settlement. Trading access may be provided only to the primary holder; do not assume that every joint holder receives a separate trading login. Confirm trading holder name and permitted login and settlement with the broker. Obtain the Broker’s permitted trading and settlement in the form, where required.
Prior to approval, read the full Schedule of Charges. Depending on the account type and terms applicable, various charges may be levied including annual maintenance charges, transaction/debit charges and optional service charges. Do not consider a ‘free account’ offered by the Depositories or broker as a waiver of charges for all services. Check if the holding arrangement of the proposed Basic Services Demat Account benefits apply, rather than assuming it.
Six mistakes that delay joint Demat account opening
Mismatched names: KYC proofs, bank documents and application forms contain spelling errors or initials differences.
Missing holder KYC: only the first applicant goes for KYC, leaving the other holders details incomplete.
Wrong holding order: Applicants do not check communication and settlement implications.
Unsupported digital application: individuals apply for joint account, using individual account route.
Incomplete authorisations: required signatures, e-signatures and/or nominations are not provided.
Unverified bank details: provided Bank doc and account holders name does not satisfy the DP’s requirements.
These problems are usually fixed prior to an application, which usually results in less back-and-forth. The provider still makes the final determination on the application.
What should you check after the account opens?
You should keep the DP's account opening confirmation and a schedule of charges. Verify the names of first and joint holders, their PAN details, linked bank accounts, operative instructions, account alerts and any nominated beneficiaries. Never share your OTP, password or e-DIS with a third party. If you already hold shares individually or under a different name, determine the transfer or dematerialisation process for the shares before assuming they can be transferred to the joint account.
For details about the rights of joint holders and their limits, read the joint Demat account rules and benefits guide. The current article deals primarily with preparing a successful application and avoid errors in documents.
