Changes to Stock Market Hours from Monday, August 3, 2026
From August 3, 2026, The Indian stock market will have new closing rules and timings that all traders and investors must be aware of. These changes are implemented by NSE at the behest of SEBI, and will include a Closing Auction Session (CAS) for F&O-enabled stocks, a 10 minute extension to derivatives, and changes to intraday square-off timings.

Indian stock market trading hours change from Monday, August 3, 2026. Here's what the new timings mean for traders, investors, and overall market participation.
Key Takeaways
- From Monday, August 3, 2026, NSE introduces a Closing Auction Session (CAS) for F&O-enabled stocks to improve closing price discovery.
- F&O stocks (under CAS): regular trading ends at 3:15 PM; auction runs 3:15–3:35 PM; official close at 3:35 PM.
- Non-F&O stocks: no change; trade till 3:30 PM as before.
- Equity & index derivatives (F&O contracts): trading hours extended by 10 minutes, now 9:15 AM–3:40 PM.
- Market open time (9:15 AM) and pre-open (9:00–9:08 AM) remain unchanged.
What are the changes?
The most significant change is to the closing price determination for stocks in the Futures & Options (F&O) segment. Currently, the official closing price for many of these stocks is determined by the Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) over the last 30 minutes of the regular session. This will change on August 3, when a more structured and transparent auction will replace the current practice for F&O stocks.
The regular trading session for these stocks will consist of two segments: the regular trading session and a closing auction segment.
New Market Hours
The new schedule effective August 3 is as follows:
F&O-enabled stocks (under CAS):
Regular trading: 9:15 AM - 3:15 PM
Closing Auction Session: 3:15 PM - 3:35 PM
“Cash market close” is at 3:35 PM (auction price)
Non-F&O stocks (not under CAS):
Regular trading: 9:15 AM - 3:30 PM (unchanged)
F&O Contracts:
Trading: 9:15 AM - 3:40 PM
Post-Close Session:
Unchanged: 3:50 PM - 4:00 PM trading at the official closing price.
There is no change to the market opening time at 9:15 AM; the pre-open continues to operate from 9:00 AM to 9:08 AM.
Why is SEBI doing this?
The goal of the SEBI changes is to enhance the quality of the closing price via price discovery and to reduce manipulation and distortion of closing prices. While VWAP was an improvement over the previous price discovery method, it was still susceptible to distortion from orders concentrated in the last 30 minutes of the trading session. The switch from the VWAP method to a centralized auction method, wherein all buy and sell orders at the close are matched, is intended to:
Effects on Various Market Participants
Intraday (MIS) Traders
If you trade intraday with the MIS (Margin Intraday Square-off) product, your auto square-off timings will be:
Equity stocks under CAS (F&O stocks): Auto square-off at 3:10 PM.
Equity stocks not under CAS: Auto square-off at 3:20 PM.
Index and stock F&O contracts: Auto square-off at 3:25 PM.
This means that F&O stocks’ intraday traders will need to exit or will be square-offed before the closing auction at 3:15 PM.
Delivery and Positional Traders in Cash Stocks
For investors who take delivery or hold positional trades in cash:
Non-F&O stocks: No practical change for you. You can trade until 3:30 PM, as before.
F&O stocks: Regular trading will now end at 3:15 PM. You can still buy or sell at the official closing price by participating in the Closing Auction Session from 3:15 PM to 3:35 PM, depending on your broker and the order type you choose.
F&O Traders (Futures and Options)
Derivatives traders now have an extra 10 minutes to manage positions:
F&O contracts will now trade until 3:40 PM rather than 3:30 PM.
This extension will allow traders the opportunity to adjust or hedge their positions based on the final cash market closing price, which will be set during the auction.
If you hold stock futures or options, this extension has provided you more time to react to end-of-day price movements, which is valuable after particularly volatile trading days or during index rebalancing.
4. Mutual fund investors and portfolio trackers
The official close impacts:
Mutual fund NAVs (calculated using closing prices).
Portfolio valuations provided by brokers and apps.
Collateral valuations for margin trading.
Currently, with the auction-based close, there will be times when the last traded price at 3:15 PM will be different from the official closing price for the F&O stocks, which will be available at 3:35 PM. In the long run, we should see tighter NAVs and portfolio valuations, but for the first few weeks, some investors may see discrepancies between the “live” P&L at 3:15 PM and the P&L at official close.
Practical tips for the trader and investor
Check with your broker: Some trading apps may fail to account for the new timings and order types linked to closing auctions. Please check how your broker will implement CAS and what intraday cut-offs will be.
Change your exit strategy: Intraday traders of F&O Stocks should exit the positions by 3:10 PM. The system will frame an auto square-off if you assume you can take your trades till 3:30 PM.
Make use of remaining 10 minutes in F&O: Derivatives traders can treat the window of 3:30 PM to 3:40 PM as an opportunity to close or hedge their positions with the last cash close.
Do not worry about the gap: Initially, you may notice a gap between the last traded price and the official closing price of F&O stocks. This is an early adoption of the new system, and is not a bug.
Beginning Monday, August 3, 2026, some of the operational changes of the Indian Stock Market will continue to impact its global position. Regular trading hours of F&O Stocks will close at 3:15 PM. A new Closing Auction Session will run until 3:35 PM, followed by a 3:40 PM cut-off for Derivatives. Non-F&O Stocks will continue trading until 3:30 PM.
Traders are required to adjust their end-of-day routines: exit intraday positions sooner, take advantage of the extended F&O window for hedging, and accept that the official close will now be determined by an auction, rather than the last minutes of a trading. Long-term investors are expected to benefit the most from these changes, as they will produce more reliable closing prices and better portfolio valuations.
